Character History Born in the village of Tricaster in the Gnarley Forest by his mother Elena, he did not know of his father, Gregor, until he was 9. For most of his young life, he had believed his mother's story that Gregor was a blacksmith, killed by Goblin raiding party when Barinth was just an infant. However, at the tender age of 9, Barinth discovered that his father was actually a Ranger Knight who left the Forest in pursuit of Goblin bandits and was captured. His return to Tricaster was celebrated by a huge party and young Barinth was awestruck of the tales his father told of adventure and treasure and magic and monsters. Barinth harbors a strong hatred for goblins and hobgoblins to this day. Upon his father's return, Barinth began learning the ways of the Rangers of the Gnarley Forest and soon became a Junior Ranger.
Things changed on his 15th birthday. A strange man came into town, completely undetected by the Ranger guards and sentries. His conversation with Barinth was private, but a few things were clear. Gregor was not Barinth's father. Elena and Gregor were lovers, and Gregor did run off to fight Goblin bandits, but, while Elena and Gregor were courting, she was attacked in the forest by a raiding party from the west. She never told anyone, but the strange man pointed out the obvious Suel blood in Barinth, in sharp contrast to his father's Oeridian features and his mother's Flannish looks. Barinth, in a rage, picked up his sword and attacked his father -- only to be restrained by Ranger guards. Upon releasing him, he fled the Gnarley Forest, without a word. He has never told anyone of what the strange man said to him. Anyone, of course, but Asgenar....
Barinth is now 19 having traveled from town to town in the Flanaess, finding work either in smithys or as a tracker. He tends to wear black and brown leather, shunning the dark greens of his hometown. His hair is long and dark, but his eyes are blue-grey and he is fair skinned. He has a large scar on his right thigh from a narrow escape from some of the city guards in Safeton. He has a tendency to drink to excess and gamble recklessly. He has few friends, and few possessions. His favorite weapons are his longbow and a longsword.
Barinth was raised worshiping the goddess Ehlonna and the god Obad-Hai, but his recent crisis has left him contemplating the gods and their designs on mortal men.... |
