Windows NT

Making the switch from UNIX to Windows NT isn't really that bad. Let's face it -- Windows was made to be a pretty easy OS to get around.... Here's some software (mostly shareware/freeware) that helps me get things done. NOTE: this isn't really a personal endoresement. I don't own stock in any of these companies, I use many of these products and I am hoping you'll find them useful as well. These are in no particular order, this list is far from exhaustive, and other non-committal disclaimers apply.

Software

• Windows Grep: Just what the name says -- grep for Windows -- even searches your Word documents and Excel spreadsheets
• WS_FTP: a GUI FTP client
• SimpTerm: A telnet client that has (most importantly for me ) a 32760 line scroll buffer
• Microsoft's Power Toys
• MiKTEX: a free TeX distribution for Windows
• Ghostscript and Ghostview: PostScript viewers
• LView: an image editor/screen capture utility
• WinXs: a bunch of UNIX commands for WinNT. Includes cat/head/tail/sed/ and many others
• Microsoft's Listing of Freeware and Shareware
• EditPlus - a groovy text editor that is quickly becoming my favorite
• SnagIt: a great Windows Screen Capture Program
• Essential shareware: the editors of zdnet's listing of essential Windows shareware

Disclaimer: I don't use VI - I'm an EMACS man. But, I guess *some* people use it:
